Crown materials — what goes where and why.
Zirconia, porcelain, PFM, gold, E.max — every crown material has different strengths. This guide helps you understand the trade-offs before your appointment.
The short answer: For back teeth where strength matters, zirconia or PFM crowns are widely used. For front teeth where appearance is the priority, E.max (lithium disilicate) often produces the most natural look. Gold crowns last the longest but are visible. PFM crowns remain common and proven but the metal margin can show at the gum line.
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia crowns are ceramic restorations made from zirconium dioxide, a high-strength engineering ceramic. They are tooth-colored, metal-free, and highly durable — making them one of the most popular crown options for both anterior and posterior teeth.

Q: Is zirconia the best crown material?
No single material is best for all situations. Zirconia excels for metal-free patients and posterior strength. E.max often looks more natural for anterior teeth. Gold lasts longest. The right material depends on tooth location, bite forces, and patient priorities.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)
PFM crowns combine a metal substructure (usually a base metal alloy or gold alloy) with a porcelain veneer on the visible surfaces. They were the dominant crown material for decades and still offer a proven durability record, though zirconia and all-ceramic options are increasingly preferred.

Q: Are PFM crowns outdated?
Not entirely — PFM crowns remain clinically sound and cost-effective. Their primary limitation is aesthetics, particularly the gum-line metal margin. Many patients now prefer all-ceramic or zirconia for aesthetic reasons, but PFM remains a valid choice where cost or specific clinical factors favor it.
E.max / Lithium Disilicate
Lithium disilicate (marketed primarily as IPS e.max) is a pressed ceramic material known for its exceptional translucency and natural light-handling properties. It is often considered the most aesthetically refined option for front teeth, producing restorations that are difficult to distinguish from natural teeth.
